Some vegans struggle to plan a wedding that accommodates their dietary preferences. Parents, friends or other guests may pressure you to include meat or other animal products in your wedding meal. Use your vegan wedding to show guests that vegan food can be just as tasty as traditional wedding foods. Consider using a wedding coordinator to plan your vegan wedding. Wedding industry professionals know of caterers, bakeries and other vendors that can make your vegan wedding a success.
1. Set a budget for your vegan wedding. Talk to your partner, parents or anyone else who may contribute financially to the wedding. Establish a whole dollar amount as well as smaller limits for the ceremony, reception, wedding attire, flowers, photography, invitations and other costs.
2. Choose the type of wedding celebration you want in terms of size, time of day and theme. Compile a guest list before considering your ceremony and reception venues. Choose a venue that comfortably fits the number of guests you expect.
3. Find a catering service that works with vegan clients. Ask your caterer for her vegan catering experience and a sample menu. Choose a catering service that fits your budget and has demonstrated experience working with vegan clients. If there are no vegan caterers in your area, bring sample recipes to demonstrate what types of food you prefer.
4. Plan your wedding reception food. Consider hor d'oeuvres, such as puff pastry with faux cheese, crostini with hummus or black bean dip, stuffed grape leaves or tomato bruschetta. For a filling vegan wedding meal, set up a large salad bar with a variety of greens, vegetables, nuts, fruits, soy cheese, beans and other vegan toppings. Serve gazpacho or a vegetable soup before dinner. Offer one or two entrees, such as mushroom risotto, an Asian-inspired curry dish, vegetable lasagna or vegan tacos.
5. Select a bakery to make your vegan wedding cake. Vegetarian restaurants, vegan bakeries or natural food stores often work with vegan clients. Explain your vegan lifestyle to the bakery and request that they avoid using eggs, butter, cream cheese and non-vegan sugar. Many bakeries charge a premium for specialty vegan ingredients.
6. Find wedding attire that fits your vegan lifestyle. Choose a dress or tuxedo made from organic cotton, hemp, peace silk, soy or bamboo. Avoid shoes made from leather or suede. Find these vegan wedding clothes online or in vegan specialty boutiques.
7. Create vegan wedding invitations by hand or through the use of a professional calligrapher. Use soy-based ink to make the invitations. Consider placing a small insert in the invitation noting that you are having a vegan wedding to allow your guests to plan gifts appropriately.
8. Consider preparing a short list of items that vegans avoid. Give this list to vendors to ensure that they understand your preferences when planning your vegan wedding.
9. Traditional relatives and guests may be wary of a vegan wedding celebration or may attempt to change your mind about a vegan wedding menu. Respectfully discuss your commitment to a vegan wedding to parents or close relatives during early planning stages to avoid disagreements.
