Autumn offers many natural decorations for fall weddings - colored foliage, flowers such as dahlias and chrysanthemum, wheat and produce. Pumpkins work great as centerpieces, candle holders, general decor and even punch bowls, but orange isn't an ideal wedding color for every bride and groom. Incorporate pumpkins into any color scheme by painting them.
Solid colors
For a simple do-it-yourself wedding project, paint pumpkins a solid color. Before painting, clean off the pumpkin with a damp paper towel and allow it to completely air dry so the paint adheres. For ease, use spray paint on the pumpkin in a well-ventilated away. Paint the pumpkins one of your wedding colors or a neutral color such as white. Or give your pumpkin a sheen by using a metallic paint on it.
Patterns and Symbols
Add visual interest to your wedding pumpkins by giving them a pattern such as polka dots, stripes, swirls or lace. Paint a symbol on the pumpkin such as a heart, doves or wedding bells. For near perfect stripes, use painter's tape to space out the stripes. Use a stencil to give the pumpkin a polka dot or lace patterns.
Templates, stencils or an artist can be used to paint on a romantic symbol. If you or a friend is a talented artist, paint the bride and groom's portrait on the pumpkin.
Glitter Pumpkins
Make your pumpkin decorations sparkle at your wedding. First paint them the color of your choice. Before the paint dries, sprinkle colored glitter over the pumpkin. Shake off any extra glitter and allow to dry. Make sure your paint color and glitter are similar or complimentary in color so the pumpkin has a cohesive appearance.
Lanterns
Turn the pumpkin into a painted lantern. Hollow out the pumpkin. Draw a heart, bell, rose or other symbol by hand or with a template on the front of the pumpkin. Use a fine-tipped linoleum cutter to carve the outline and interior features of the image.
You only want to scrape away the outside shell to expose the flesh; you don't want to cut all the way through the pumpkin. Paint the uncarved portions of the pumpkin with a paintbrush. Put a lit candle in the pumpkin. Its light will shine through the carved portions of the pumpkin, creating a romantic glow.
Words and Numbers
Use your pumpkins as signs or table numbers. Paint the pumpkins a solid color. Use a second color to paint "Welcome," "Wedding," the wedding date or the newlywed's names on the produce. Paint numbers on the pumpkins and place them at the reception tables so the guest can find their seat. You can also label the cake, presents or buffet table using painted pumpkins.
